Dear Jan: My grandfather, W.P.C. A. was travelling with my grandmother, E. A., accompanied by a nurse, Sister Lilian McCumstie,  to London for a neurosurgical operation.  E. (46 years old) had been ill for several months with shocking headaches due to a brain tumor and had to travel to London for treatment as there were no neurosurgeons in Australia at that time.  In fact, the specialty of neurosurgery was in its infancy in the USA with Dr Harvey Cushing who trained the Australian neurosurgeon in London, Hugh William Bell Cairns and Dr Norman Dott in Scotland.
My mother, who was 10 at the time, remembers being told that the pilot for that flight was a Captain te Roller.(I only came across the correct spelling last week as we didn’t know how to spell it – we were trying phonetically with e.g. Tyrolla, Tirolla, etc.)
She also remembers that he came to their home in Wahroonga (a suburb of Sydney) for dinner some time later. I imagine that my grandfather got to know the pilot well as they all spent so much time together on the flight.
We still have one of the large blue KLM suitcases which were issued to passengers for those flights.

After a bit of a research in all available digital newspaper archives and the fantastic publication (in Dutch) of the KLM flights to the former Dutch Indies, it became clear that the pilot of this plane had to be G.J.C. te Roller. Because of the identity of some passengers as shown above, it was a bit easy to discover several facts. Because of the two questions (to find the pilot of the KLM on that flight, and the several landings made during the journey), I made a logbook of that flight with all available facts as shown in this document.

Geachte dame/heer: Hierbij vraag ik u of er nog meer foto’s of gegevens beschikbaar zijn over Bernard Hollebrand tijdens zijn tijd in Andir-Indonesië. Alles is welkom. Bernard was een broer van mijn moeder. Bij voorbaat mijn dank! CN (moeders achternaam Hollebrand)

Bernard Hollebrand kwam om het leven op 7 maart 1930 tijdens een noodlottig afgelopen vliegtuig met registratie H.L.149. Het vliegtuig werd bestuurd door luitenant vlieger J. Hoste die een dag later aan zijn verwondingen overleed. Bernard Hollebrand was Europees fuselier, militair stamboek nummer 86436. Hollebrand werkte sinds 1928 bij de parachute-afdeling op Andir. Die afdeling was vrij nieuw, omdat pas vanaf medio 1927 proeven met parachutes werden gehouden. Blijkens een krantenbericht uit de Indische Courant had hij ook een vriendin van Soendanese afkomst. Hollebrand was ook lid van het voetbalelftal van de LA en was bestuurslid van de voetbalvereniging.

Op die bewuste 7 maart gingen Hoste en Hollebrand naar Kalidjati voor het brengen van parachute-onderdelen. Op Kalidjati was de Vliegschool gevestigd en werden ook proeven met parachutes genomen. Hoste was voorbestemd om aangewezen te worden als hoofd van de (dan nog experimentele) parachute-afdeling van de LA. Hollebrand werd in de vroege morgen van 8 maart, circa 7 uur, te Bandoeng begraven.
